How to Rid Yourself of Limiting Beliefs with EFT Tapping

Have you ever caught yourself thinking, "I’ll never be good enough" — even when things are going well? That’s a limiting belief. And you're not alone.

Most of us carry limiting beliefs — unconscious thoughts or patterns that quietly shape how we see ourselves and the world. They might sound like:

These beliefs can hold us back in relationships, careers, creativity, and emotional wellbeing — often without us even realising it.

Thankfully, there’s a body-based technique that can help shift these beliefs — even when they feel deeply ingrained.

Where Limiting Beliefs Come From

Limiting beliefs usually form in childhood or during emotionally significant moments. They can be passed down by caregivers, shaped by traumatic or stressful experiences, or created when we make sense of a difficult situation in a way that protects us — but later becomes restrictive.

For example:

  • A child who’s scolded for expressing anger may grow up believing “It’s not safe to feel emotion.”

  • A student laughed at in class may internalise “I’m not smart enough.”

  • Someone abandoned in a relationship might conclude “People always leave.”

These beliefs aren’t logical — they’re emotional imprints. And because they live in the subconscious and body, they don’t always shift through positive thinking or self-help alone.

Why EFT Is So Effective

EFT, or Emotional Freedom Techniques, is a gentle, body-based method that helps reduce stress and emotional overwhelm. It involves tapping on specific acupressure points while focusing on particular thoughts, emotions, or memories.

Although it might sound a little unusual at first, EFT is supported by over 100 independent clinical studies showing how effective it can be for anxiety, PTSD, phobias, chronic pain, and more.

When we think about something stressful, the brain’s amygdala — its internal alarm system — can trigger a fight-or-flight response, even if the threat isn’t real. EFT helps calm that response in real time by reducing amygdala activation and helping your body feel safe again.

With repetition, the brain starts to relearn:

"I can think about this — and still feel safe."

That’s how EFT creates lasting change — not just by managing symptoms, but by helping to rewire the body’s reaction to stress at the root.

Why It's Hard to Do Alone

Even when we know we’re holding onto limiting beliefs, releasing them isn’t always easy — especially on our own.

Here’s why working with a practitioner helps:

  • Blind spots: Our limiting beliefs often operate outside conscious awareness. A practitioner helps spot them.

  • Resistance: It can be hard to ask ourselves difficult questions or go deeper when we feel emotionally stuck.

  • Safety: Sharing your thoughts in a supportive space makes it easier to explore the root without shame.

  • Guidance: A practitioner tailors the tapping process to your unique history and emotional landscape.

In a typical session, we might begin with a surface belief — like "I’m not enough" — and gently explore where that story began. As we tap through the layers, clients often uncover memories or emotions they hadn’t connected before. It’s in these moments that real healing starts to unfold.

A Real Case Study: Releasing “I’m Not Worthy”

Tara came into her first session unsure of what she wanted to work on. But as we gently explored, one belief kept surfacing — “I’m not good enough.”

She grew up in a chaotic home, with a mother who drank heavily and a father who was absent. Despite being deeply self-aware, Tara found herself triggered in relationships, experiencing jealousy, mistrust, and feelings of unworthiness — particularly around her partner.

Through tapping, we worked on:

  • Early childhood memories that shaped her belief

  • The fear of not being good enough for love

  • Deep-rooted anxiety around being seen and failing

As we tapped through the layers, Tara’s emotional intensity began to shift. She described feeling lighter, more grounded, and more in touch with the part of herself that knew she was worthy.

“Now that I know I’m worthy, I truly love and accept myself.”

These are the kinds of statements we reinforce during positive rounds of tapping — not as forced affirmations, but as genuine reflections of how the body begins to feel.

The Bottom Line

Limiting beliefs are not permanent — they’re patterns your nervous system learned to keep you safe. With tools like EFT Tapping, those patterns can be gently rewired and replaced.

They can be changed for good.

Whether it’s fear of failure, self-doubt, or not feeling “enough,” you can begin to shift your inner narrative and experience more freedom.
